Pumpkin orange petals tipped in white, deepening to golden yellow at the centre, Bloomquist Candy Corn looks exactly like a handful of the Halloween sweet. The informal decorative blooms are loose and lively, four to six inches across, with the white tipping varying from bold to barely there depending on the flower. It is a true bicolour and one of the most instantly recognisable dahlias in any field. Floret files it under novelty, which feels right.
Plants grow roughly four feet with strong stems, and the variety has become a staple for growers selling autumn bunches. Harvest when the blooms are about three-quarters open, since they do not open much further after cutting, and expect around five days in the vase. It is a natural with rust, bronze and cream, and it sings beside deep burgundy. From the Bloomquist family of introductions in Washington state, long admired for their clean, unusual colouring.
