Bloomquist Golden looks like a watercolour sketch of a dahlia. A single ring of soft gold petals, brushed with pale pink at the edges, surrounds a fluffy tuft of mustard yellow florets that catches the light. The blooms are small, three to four inches, and the anemone form gives them a sparkle that bigger, fuller flowers never quite manage.
Plants reach three to four feet and flower generously, and the open centre makes this one a magnet for bees. Bred by Paul Bloomquist of Lynden, Washington and introduced in 2021, it is best treated as a special-occasion flower, since the vase life is on the shorter side. Cut it fresh for a dinner table or event work and mix it with cream, honey and ochre tones for an easy, sunlit look.
