River's Elizabeth

Stellar dahlias are a rarity in most gardens, and River's Elizabeth shows off the form at its best. The petals roll back along their length and radiate from the centre like a star, giving the bloom a lively, open silhouette that catches the eye from across the field. The colour is a dark blend, a deep wine pink that shades darker toward the base of each petal. Flowers run around four to five inches, large enough to anchor a bouquet without overwhelming it.

The plant is a solid performer with the stems and vigour growers expect from a show quality stellar. Its moody colouring sits beautifully with burgundy, plum and dusty rose, and it adds movement to arrangements that are otherwise built from rounded ball and decorative forms. Florists love stellars for exactly that reason. It suits anyone who wants to broaden their collection beyond the usual shapes and bring a little drama to late summer bunches.
