Lavender dahlias are rarer than you would think, and Mingus Leroy is one of the best. The five-inch laciniated blooms have split, fringed petal tips that give the flower a feathery, slightly windblown texture, and the clear lavender colour stays cool and even from edge to centre. It is light and airy where many dahlias are dense. Registered as Mingus Leroy T, it comes from the long-running Mingus line of American introductions.
Plants reach about four and a half feet with stems that hold the blooms upright and cut well. The soft colour is a gift for florists, bridging pink and purple palettes and glowing against silver and white. It brings texture as well as colour, which is why it earns a place in mixed bouquets. A good choice for growers who want something cool and unusual among the usual warm tones.
