Black Lars is about as dark as a dahlia gets. The decorative blooms are a deep, velvety purple that reads almost black in the shade and glows wine red when the sun hits the petals. Each flower is fully double with neat, slightly rolled petals, and the depth of colour gives it a moody elegance that lighter varieties cannot match.
Plants stay compact and bushy, usually two to three feet, with upright stems that need little staking. It flowers from midsummer right through to the first frosts, and the dark blooms are a striking anchor in a bouquet of blush, peach and cream. Good for the front of a border or a large pot, and for anyone who likes a touch of drama in the cutting garden.
