A raised cushion of tiny tubular florets sits at the heart of this anemone dahlia, dark and flecked with gold like a jewelled brooch. Around it, a ring of flat petals glows in deep mulberry crimson, many of them brushed with pale streaks near the base. The result is rich, textured and quite unlike a standard double.
Rosie Raven was introduced by the English gardener and writer Sarah Raven, who named it for her daughter. Plants stay fairly compact at around 70 cm, so it suits borders, large pots and the front of a cutting bed. The open centre is easy for bees and butterflies to reach, and the jewel tones look wonderful with dark foliage, plum scabiosa or lime green fillers.
