Fluted claret petals ring a dense, fluffy centre that reads almost black, giving Purple Haze a moody, layered look. This is an anemone-flowered dahlia, so the outer petals lie fairly flat around a raised pincushion of short tubular florets. Blooms measure roughly 4 to 6 inches and hold their colour well. The overall effect is somewhere between wine red and deep purple.
Dark foliage sets the flowers off beautifully in the garden, and plants stay fairly compact at about 2.5 to 3 feet. It produces a heavy crop over the season and the blooms are known for lasting well once cut. Try it with silvery foliage, dusty mauves or rich plum tones. It suits gardeners and arrangers who enjoy unusual shapes and darker colour stories.
