Mirage earns its name by refusing to stay one colour. Early in the season the symmetrical formal decorative blooms open in a gentle yellow washed with soft pinky mauve and a plum centre; as summer wears on they shift toward a buff tan with a raspberry underside and fine raspberry picotee edges. Each flower is around four inches, neatly layered and almost painterly in its layering of tones.
Plants are sturdy and reach three and a half to four feet, with stems that suit cutting. Because the colour moves with the season you get what feels like two varieties from one row, both of which sit comfortably with blush, cream, mauve and soft apricot. Grown from seed by River Merle in 2022 and released in 2026, it is one for growers who love the watercolour end of the dahlia spectrum.
