Tweedia, also known as Blue Milkweed, is a unique and highly sought-after cut flower valued for its soft sky-blue, star-shaped blooms and airy, trailing habit. A favourite for wedding work and bouquet design, Tweedia adds a delicate, romantic texture and a rare true blue tone that pairs beautifully with a wide range of flowers.
Plants are grown from plugs and established in 4” pots, giving you a strong start for the growing season. Tweedia performs best in warm conditions and will reward growers with continuous blooms throughout the summer.
Plant Details
Botanical name: Oxypetalum coeruleum
Common name: Tweedia, Blue Milkweed
Plant type: Tender perennial (grown as an annual in Ontario)
Growth habit: Sprawling, lightly trailing
Height: 24–36 inches
Spacing: 6–12 inches
Sun: Full sun to partial shade (minimum 6 hours direct sun)
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions; sensitive to frost
Growing Information
Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Tweedia benefits from consistent moisture but should not be overwatered. Pinching young plants at 4–5 inches will encourage branching and increase flower production. While staking is not required, light support or netting can help manage its sprawling habit and keep stems upright for cutting.
Harvest and Use
Harvest stems when the first flowers are open and additional buds are still developing. Tweedia produces a milky sap when cut, which may irritate sensitive skin. A unique and valuable addition to bouquets, especially for wedding work and soft, pastel palettes.
Vase Life & Post-Harvest Care
Place stems in clean water immediately after cutting. Some growers use warm water conditioning or other methods to improve hydration due to the plant’s milky sap. Once conditioned, stems can last over a week in the vase.
